The Sunday Somethings, March 15

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

My friend, Audrey, and I have been working on a weekly template that we can use to blog about the day to day things in our lives. I enjoyed doing the Simple Woman’s Daybook, but I didn’t identify with the overall spirit of that site. I’m a complicated woman, what can I say? So here’s the debut of “The Sunday Somethings.” Feel free to join us, but please link to Audrey and me. Our categories may evolve over time, and the categories may vary slightly from person to person (Audrey wanted an entry for bridge related news, and I wanted one about Maddie).

It’s Saturday night, and we’re in a hotel room in Atlanta. We’re here for a little over a day visiting my grandparents and attending my cousin’s band concert. Short visit. Wish we could see all of my family in the area, but we knew it would be a hectic visit. We are checking out of the hotel in the morning, so we won’t have internet access for most of the day. So, I’m scheduling this to post sometime tomorrow.

Something that made me smile this week: Seeing Maddie interact with her Great Grandparents this weekend.

Something I’m thinking: I can’t believe that Gabe actually managed to get Maddie to fall asleep in the pack-n-play. She didn’t sleep well in the hotel in SC last night, and she put up quite a fight tonight. Hopefully, we didn’t disturb anyone in the hotel…

Something I am hoping: That Maddie stays asleep in the pack-n-play for at least a little while. I think I will write this and then do some reading, assuming that I have the luxury of time to do so.

Something happening around the house: Hopefully nothing, since we aren’t there at the time that I’m typing this.

Something I’m reading: I finished Coraline and started reading The Book Thief by Mark Zusak. I’m only a few pages into it so far. The format is a little odd to start, so I’m curious to see where things are going to go from here. The Book Thief is April’s book club pick for my regular book club.

Something tasty I ate this week: Yummy lasagna. I made a batch for ourselves when I made some for our friends who just had a new baby.

Something Maddie did this week: She’s walking more than ever! She’s getting quite steady on her feet and definitely prefers walking to crawling in almost all cases. She gets a little clumsy when she’s tired.

Something I struggled with this week: On Friday, I went to nurse Maddie at lunchtime and she was wired from her visit with the toddler room a bit earlier. She didn’t request to nurse, so I let her play while I was there and did not end up nursing her during my visit. I have been considering weaning her from the lunchtime feeding. She’s usually quite busy when she’s at school, so she doesn’t nurse very much during the day. I felt a bit sad that she didn’t need to nurse on Friday at lunch! I don’t think that this means she’s weaning in general as she still requests to nurse more frequently when we’re at home (and all night long).

Something I’m doing towards my goals: I guess I should figure out what my goals are going to be. Audrey has a real list of goals that she created a few weeks ago or so. As Cindy stated in the comments, I kinda wanted to wait until her goals weren’t so fresh in my mind before I wrote my own. That’s partially the truth and partially an excuse to procrastinate writing up my own set of goals. So, what am I doing towards my goals? I don’t know what all my goals are, but I guess that this week I made lasagna for some new parents and signed up to bring a meal to friends who just added a second child to their family. One of my “life” goals is to be the sort of person who does that sort of thing. I guess when I get around to writing up my goals, I should be more specific. Basically, we were so grateful for our family and friends who brought us meals in the early newborn days with Maddie. We appreciated it so much and never realized how much it really makes a difference. I need to add more casserole type recipes to my repertoire, though, as I pretty much just make lasagna.

Something I’m looking forward to next week: My regular book club is discussing the Twilight series (books 1-4). I think we’re going to have an excellent turnout for this one – I guess we could have just made it a regular reading instead of an optional selection!

Something I captured: I anticipate that this section will most often be used to post a photo. This week, I’m posting video instead:

For today…

Outside my window… is a beautiful, sunny day. I can’t believe that a week ago we had snow and today it was in the 80s. Crazy NC weather.

I am thinking… about starting my own weekly journal. I’ve been thinking about this since before I started participating. The Simple Woman’s Daybook isn’t really me. I love the format, and I appreciate most of the prompts, but I would like something a little different.

I am thankful for… the beautiful weather this weekend. We spent a lot of time playing outside, and Maddie LOVED it.

From the kitchen… we will have lasagna later this week as I’m making a batch for friends who just had their baby. I’ve been making ourselves a batch when I make it for someone else. YUM!

I am wearing… jeans and a short-sleeved t-shirt.

I am creating… a new blog template for my weekly updates. I’m also still creating my 2008 photobooks. I started a new photo project that will be a poster with a photo of Maddie from each month.

I am going… on a roadtrip to Atlanta soon.

I am reading… Coraline by Neil Gaiman. I’m excited to finally be able to read something that isn’t for book club!

I am hoping… for everyone in my family to be completely well again. It seems like one or all of us have been battling one thing or another for the past two months. I have been trying to get rid of a cold the last several days. I’m feeling better, but I’m ready to be completely well.

I am hearing… Maddie babbling about her Little People and their bus.

Around the house… we have a new fridge! It’s amazing how much you take a functioning fridge for granted. We now have thermometers in our fridge and freezer so that we can keep an eye on whether the temperature is in the safe range! It’s a little scary to think about how long the fridge could have been slowly trying to kill us!

One of my favorite things… is watching Maddie walk all over the place! She has really taken off in the past few days.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Mothers & More bookclub tomorrow night for The Magician’s Assistant, visit my grandparents, attend my cousin’s band concert.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing… Maddie had her first haircut this weekend. She looked adorable just as they were getting ready to cut her hair!

For today…

Outside my window… is snow! The threat of inclement weather hung over us all weekend. I was hoping it would go away since it was interfering with our plans for Maddie’s birthday party. My parents ended up not being able to make it to the party. The food that we were able to salvage from our fridge is on our back deck, covered in snow. More on that later.

I am thinking… about my husband and mother-in-law who were not here when I woke up to this winter wonderland. Gabe’s mom had an early flight out of RDU, so I’m hoping that everything is ok with the drive to the airport. I’m not happy that schools and businesses are delayed and closed and that they are out on the roads. Update: Gabe made it back safely.

I am thankful for… Catherine’s family arriving safely back home last night. I was worried about them as some of the conditions on their way home from the party were quite bad. Every time they gave us an update on the phone, they passed at least 2 or 3 cars that had “slid off the road.” That wasn’t terribly comforting!

From the kitchen… considering that our fridge died, spoiling hundreds of dollars in food, I have no idea what we are going to eat tonight. We discovered this fact on Sunday morning. Everything in the freezer was dripping and mushy, and we felt like almost everything was unsafe considering the temperature in the freezer was 50 and the fridge was 58. I think that I’m going to always have a thermometer in the fridge and freezer in the future – who knows if the fridge was slowly trying to kill us over the past several weeks or if it just suddenly kicked the bucket. I had prepared Veggie Pizza, Black Bean Salsa, and Jarlsberg Cheese Dip (among other things) for Maddie’s party.

I am wearing… pajamas since it’s 7am and work doesn’t open until 10am. I wish I was still in bed, but I couldn’t get back to sleep when I realized Gabe was not here.

I am creating… our 2008 photobooks. I don’t think I made any progress on them last week, so maybe I’ll have a chance to do a little this week.

I am going… to a Mothers and More meeting on Thursday. I’m introducing a new mommy friend to the organization.

I am reading… Love the One You’re With by Emily Giffin for March’s book club meeting. I’m not sure what I will read after I finish that one! I think I might be able to manage a non-book-club-book this time.

I am hoping… for Spring to get here and stay very soon.

I am hearing… the lack of a refrigerator hum.

Around the house… it’s cold!

One of my favorite things… is photos, and I can’t wait to see the photos that Catherine took at Maddie’s party this weekend! It was nice to not have to worry about taking photos, especially since the day was so chaotic with the broken fridge and the impending inclement weather.

A few plans for the rest of the week: buy a new fridge, a Mothers & More meeting, a one-year-old’s birthday party, and a soccer game.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing… Birthday cakes from Maddie’s party – she had her own little lion cake. The cakes matched the theme decorations perfectly. You can also see the jungle themed Whimsical Cookie favors.

For today…

Outside my window… Clear, but far too cold. I’m so done with cold. Bring on Spring!

I am thinking… that I *really* need to finalize plans for Maddie’s party this weekend…before our out of town guests arrive!

I am thankful for… the completion of Maddie’s antibiotic after her last dose this morning. She HATES taking her medicine, and it has been a huge chore to give it to her each morning. We had to hold her down while she screamed bloody murder until she swallowed the stuff. Not fun.

From the kitchen… probably ham steaks. Running low on food again since we usually shop on Wednesday. I have NO idea what we’re going to eat tomorrow, if we’re going to resist going to the store until Wednesday…

I am wearing… my pajamas again, since I am just about to get ready for work.

I am creating… our 2008 photobooks. I don’t think I’ll be able to fit everything into one book for 2008! I finished the Maddie-a-day photobook, and I can’t wait to see it in person.

I am going… to book club on Wednesday and Maddie’s one year check up on Thursday.

I am reading… The Magician’s Assistant for the Mothers & More book club on March 10th. I’ve been making decent progress. Next on my list is Love the One You’re With for regular book club.

I am hoping… that my family can get healthy. One or all of us has been sick for about a month. I’m still not feeling great, Gabe is still a bit sniffly, and Maddie has her fussy moments. We’re sick of being sick!

I am hearing… silence as I’m writing this while Gabe and Maddie are still sleeping. Hrm, I think I spoke too soon. I hear a little voice and then Daddy’s voice saying, “where’s Mommy?”

Around the house… toys, toys everywhere. Oh, except for where there’s our clutter. Somehow, I’m not sure that this answer is ever going to be much difference except for maybe once a month, the night before the cleaners arrive.

One of my favorite things… Shutterfly photobooks. I used to scrapbook, and the photobooks are so much faster. I miss some aspects of scrapbooking, but I really love my coffee table books. Not that we would put them on the coffee table since a certain someone would rip them to shreds. I’m looking forward to getting the Maddie-a-Day book!!

A few plans for the rest of the week: this will be a busy week: book club on Wednesday, Maddie’s one year check up, and family visiting for Maddie’s birthday party next weekend!

Here is a picture thought I am sharing… the birthday girl enjoying her very first cupcake (and thinking, “what is that on my head??”)

Simple Woman’s Daybook, February 16

Monday, February 16th, 2009

For today…

Outside my window… the weather has been pretty clear, but a bit cooler than it was last week. I’m ready for Spring to come to stay.

I am thinking… that I should probably figure out the rest of the plans for Maddie’s birthday party (which is going to be the weekend after her birthday).

I am thankful for… baby Tylenol and baby Motrin. The last two weeks have been rough, but I can’t imagine how difficult that the days and especially nights would have been without meds for little Miss Maddie.

From the kitchen… Pork Loin tonight, probably. I always feel like we’re running out of options by Monday since we generally do our shopping mid-week for a week or so at a time.

I am wearing… my pajamas as I’m trying to write this before going to work this morning. Gabe and Maddie are still snoozing.

I am creating… Maddie’s photo-a-day photobook – still working on it. Obviously, I can’t finish it until after Friday. I can’t believe that her birthday is so soon!

I am going… to work after missing over a week due to Maddie’s flu. I’m hoping to make it through the day without Maddie getting sent home from daycare. Hopefully, she will have a good day (and I’ll be able to figure out what I was doing over a week ago).

I am reading… The Magician’s Assistant for the Mothers & More book club. I finished To Kill a Mockingbird last night for my regular book club. I hope to finish The Magician’s Assistant by March 10th.

I am hoping… that Maddie is over her illness and that Gabe and I don’t get the flu. We’ve both had colds, but I’m hoping that we’ve had the worst of it.

I am hearing… silence, mostly. Pretty much the only sounds I’m hearing are the clicking of my keys and the hum of the heat.

Around the house… it’s a disaster, as usual. At least I can blame Maddie these days, though most of the mess has nothing to do with her. The Little People and stacking cups strewn about the living room is mostly her. Mostly.

One of my favorite things… Our DVR. I guess we’d be very limited with the shows that we could watch if we didn’t have DVR (we’re finding that our TV viewing has become somewhat limited as it is…). I was very glad to have DVR in the newborn days, especially when I had to be awake for hours at a time in the middle of the night nursing Maddie.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Maddie’s 1st birthday is Friday. I can’t believe that I will be the mother of a one year old by the end of the week. Where does the time go?

Here is a picture thought I am sharing… My little toddler, taken yesterday afternoon.

Simple Woman’s Daybook, February 9

Monday, February 9th, 2009

My friend Ann has been doing these for several weeks, and I’ve been thinking about joining her. This is the first time that I have remembered to do it on Monday. I like the format of the posts, but time will tell if I have different things to say each week. So, here’s my first entry for The Simple Woman’s Daybook. I think I’m supposed to be doing it at the beginning of the day, but I just don’t see that happening for most Mondays.

For today…

Outside my window… the weather is beautiful, though a little cooler than the past two days. We’ve been taking Maddie outside for a little bit each day. I think the fresh air helps her with her illness, and at very least it makes her happy for a few minutes.

I am thinking… babies are hard, but sick babies are even harder!

I am thankful for… my awesome husband who is a very involved Daddy. It’s times like these last few days that make me truly grateful.

From the kitchen… Crockpot Sausage and Rigatoni. Surprisingly simple, surprisingly tasty. Maddie loved it again this time.

I am wearing… my pajamas since I just gave Maddie a bath a little bit ago.

I am creating… a few blog posts about the recent consignment sale and Maddie’s photo-a-day photobook. I’m excited about Maddie’s book. I have it up-to-date through the end of 2008. Sometime this week, I hope to get it updated through January. I’m trying to get my iPhoto library in order before sorting through 2009 photos. I am trying to weed through 12,000 photos from 2008 so that I can work on the new iPhoto facial recognition stuff.

I am going… to take Maddie to the doctor AGAIN tomorrow morning since her fever was 104 a little bit ago.

I am reading… not as much as I should. I am trying to read To Kill a Mockingbird by the end of the month for book club plus The Magician’s Assistant by March 10th for another book club. I haven’t really started either. I’m finding it hard to get motivated to read, and the last few days have been rough as I’ve been caring for a sick Maddie.

I am hoping… that Maddie gets better soon. She has been sick since Thursday night and has run fevers over 103 for the past 3 nights. Saturday night was scary as she spiked 105.5. We almost went to the emergency room, but the advice nurse caught us just as we were walking out the door. We got her fever under control with the nurse’s tips and took her to the urgent care in the morning, making our visit the 3rd doctor’s visit in as many days.

I am hearing… mostly quiet, except a few cries here and there from Maddie as Gabe is rocking her upstairs. She seems calm now.

Around the house… Maddie’s toys are everywhere! She’s been really into putting things into baskets or boxes and taking them out again. This does not yet translate to putting her toys away, but it shows promise.

One of my favorite things… our neglected Nintendo Wii, though we have been playing it a lot more lately. Recently, we have been playing quite a bit of Animal Crossing, when we can find a minute or two to play.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Read To Kill a Mockingbird (or at least get started). Sort through the rest of 2008′s photos, deleting everything from the laptop that didn’t make the cut. Getting those blog posts finished and scheduled to post. Go to the dreaded dentist to get my tooth problem looked at for the 4th time. Host a playdate with one of Maddie’s buddies this Saturday. Work on Maddie’s photo-a-day book.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing… She looked like she was getting better this morning, but she was back to feeling awful this afternoon. Look at that sweet wispy hair!
