Maddie’s First Solid Food Experience
Wednesday, July 9th, 2008After Maddie’s 4-month appointment, we had decided to wait to introduce solid foods until closer to her 6-month appointment. She has demonstrated a likely dairy allergy, so we didn’t want to risk other allergies. She has become more and more interested in our food lately. Also, some people claim that babies sleep better once they start eating solids. For these reasons and others, we felt that she was ready for solid foods. We are going to wait until she is 6-months before we introduce other foods, but we decided that rice cereal would likely be safe. It’s extremely unlikely for her to have an allergy to it. I stopped at the grocery store on the way home from work, and I selected an organic brand that had very few ingredients. I was surprised to find that many of the rice cereals contain soy. Apparently many babies with a dairy allergy also have a soy allergy, so we didn’t want to risk giving her soy!
We sat her in her Bumbo and prepared the cereal. I followed the instructions on the box for the amount that we are supposed to prepare for her first feeding. I missed the part where the first feeding should be with milk or formula (normally you can also mix it with water). In hindsight, it makes sense that Maddie would like it better if prepared with Mommy’s milk!
