Our anniversary meals – 6 years and counting!

Thursday, November 1st, 2012

Every year on our anniversary, we go to a “fancy” restaurant that is new to both of us. This year, we chose Bloomsbury Bistro, and we had a fabulous meal. I hope to enjoy many, many more. I love looking at the photos from each year. It’s tricky to get a decent photo inside the restaurants, but looking at them brings back the memories of the celebratory meals.

Something that makes me happy: We had a family photo session with Catherine this weekend, and I think it went well! I’m looking forward to seeing our photos.

Something I’m thinking: I am thinking I could probably sleep for a week. I’m still not recovered from our trip. I didn’t have the energy to attempt to write this up Sunday! We had a busy weekend.

Something I’m hoping: I’m hoping I can feel caught up soon, but we have some busy weeks leading up to the super busy holiday season (as usual).

Something I’m reading: I finished the second book of The Mysterious Benedict Society series, and I’m really enjoying this kids’ series. I started and finished reading Looking for Alaska for November’s book club. I also started and finished Where We Belong by Emily Giffin. All of these were easy reads!

Something Gabe is reading: The Blinding Knife by Brent Weeks.

Something I’m creating: I haven’t been able to create anything lately, but I need to work on blog posts and photobooks…and sorting through photos…and….and….and…

Something tasty: I received a surprise box of Jelly Bellies in the mail this weekend. YUM!

Something about both kiddos: They are not quiet in the car in the mornings. Last week, they pretended like our car ride was a roller coaster ride. “Put your hands up! It’s a roller coaster! Mommy, go faster!” I had to explain to them the traffic laws, and now I’m sure people are going to think that we were pulled over by a police car (or “dragged over,” as Maddie explains it). They have been talking about how the policeman might pull you over and say, “you are going TOO fast.” It’s fun to see what sticks with them these days. Both kids are interested in playing on the DS, LeapPad (Maddie’s), and iPad (Daddy’s). We are turning them into little device junkies. We need to cut back on their device time…they have gotten more time than usual between having a lot of it during down times on the trip (and now with Cullen getting sick). I think they have decided that they want to have a (small) joint birthday party with a LEGO theme. Fun!

Something Maddie is doing (4.5 years old): Maddie hasn’t wanted to go to school the last few days. I’m not sure what is going on with that, but we also heard from her teachers that she hasn’t been listening very well to them (again – we have gone through phases of this before). She acts excited about her Halloween parade (well, maybe just the part where they get candy) tomorrow morning, but I have a feeling she is going to be very cold! Last year, it was chilly on the morning of the parade, and Maddie looked miserable.

Something Cullen is doing (2.5 years old): Cullen has had a great week (and a half) with the potty. He’s only had a couple of accidents. He’s doing very, very well!!! He had a fever yesterday afternoon, so we have spent the day together with a lot of cuddling and TV. Don’t judge. It keeps him calm and happy. It’s good for recovery, right? He hasn’t had a big appetite, but otherwise he doesn’t have too many symptoms, thankfully. Hopefully, he will be fever free tonight so he can go to school tomorrow for Halloween. He has been clinging with me since returning from the trip. I think he got used to being with us all the time while we were on vacation, so the separations for school and bedtime have been harder than usual.

Something I’m doing towards my goals: I’m making a little progress with sorting through photos from Disney. Big job. I’m hoping to make a first pass through everything before we get the photo pass photos in the mail this week.

Something I learned: You have to have the photos mailed to you from photopass if you have over 700 photos. I do like the instant download that I did in April, but a few more days gives me a better head start on organizing the pics, right?

Something I’m looking forward to: Halloween (hoping everyone is well), including Maddie’s parade at school tomorrow morning. First visit from the cleaners in a month since we skipped a cleaning while out of town. Finishing up much needed service on both cars (the van was serviced yesterday and the accord will be on Friday). A play on Saturday as well as the magnet fair. It’s just a busy time between now and the end of the year, it seems. As usual.

Something captured: We had another wonderful anniversary dinner! Happy 6 years!

Coquette Brasserie: a belated “review”

Monday, January 16th, 2012

I’m woefully behind on the blog, due to an awesome 5-year anniversary photobook that I made for Gabe for Christmas. I included photos from our wedding day to our 5th anniversary. I think it turned out great, but it took a lot of work (including two vacation days to get it done in time). I didn’t have time to sort through any photos since then between that and then the cruise and then Christmas. Whew!

So, I wasn’t able to give Coquette Brasserie a proper review, considering it has now been two months since our meal. I’ll see what I can remember.

We made reservations at the last minute since our original plans fell through. A friend had recommended it, and French cuisine always sounds like a fancy place worthy of an anniversary dinner. Our criteria for anniversary dinners is that it has to be fairly fancy (somewhere that we wouldn’t want to take the kids is best) and somewhere neither of us have been (preferably, though in later years we may change our minds).

When making the reservations, I just happened to mention that it was our anniversary. I remembered that when we ate at Second Empire, they made us a custom menu, and other places have recognized our anniversary.

We arrived a little early, and they were not very busy and seated us right away. We were a little disappointed as many of the tables are quite close together. It’s not a great place if you want a private meal. We were seated right next some other people who finished up not long after we arrived. We had two small tables on either side of us. The hostess tried to seat other people next to us, but everyone requested a different table, fortunately. I wish we had thought to do that! We were happy that nobody wanted to sit close to us.

I’m glad we mentioned our anniversary, because they brought us complimentary champagne to celebrate soon after we were seated.

I wanted a glass of wine, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted. The waiter brought me 3 different samples (at least a third of a glass each) to try before I ordered a full glass. One of the wines I hated, but I ended up liking the one I ordered, especially with my entree. I wish I had written it down so I could remember what it was! We were impressed with the service and their attention to our special day.

We had a cheese plate, and I think we’ve both decided that while we love cheese, we’re not sure we love ALL cheeses (especially most blue cheese type cheeses). At least one of the cheeses was yummy. I had the Onion Soup Gratinee and Beef Bourguignon. Gabe had a special soup (we can’t remember exactly what it was, but it wasn’t a regular menu item) and one of the fish dishes (probably salmon). I think everything was good, but nothing has compared to our experience at Mo’s Diner. I’m pretty sure we had dessert, too. It was a nice experience, and I would recommend it for a special occasion.

Something that makes me happy: Celebrating our wedding anniversary (four wonderful years and counting!).

Something I’m thinking: I think I ate too much dinner. We had meatloaf and potatoes in a crockpot. It was yummy, but it’s pretty dense.

Something happening around the house: We carved pumpkins today!

Something I’m reading: Still reading bits and pieces of Enchanted, Inc. here and there. I’m excited that Gabe has been reading The Hunger Games series. He will probably finish the trilogy before me.

Something I’m watching: We started watching Shutter Island last night, but we weren’t able to finish it. I hope we’ll finish watching it tonight after The Amazing Race.

Something tasty: We went out to dinner to Acme Food and Beverage Company for our anniversary. It was great!!! I especially loved my appetizer which included heirloom tomatoes (best tomatoes I’ve ever had!), mozzarella cheese (I made a rare exception to the no dairy as I didn’t feel I could pass up that appetizer!), deviled eggs, and pickled something…squash? regular pickles? I am not sure, but it was all very, very good.

Something Maddie is doing (32 months old): Maddie and I went to the fair with Shannon and Keira. I think the most memorable moment for Maddie was riding the pony. She was so scared while doing it that she was shaking, but then afterward she couldn’t stop talking about it. When we got home, she couldn’t wait to tell Daddy. This is a good season for Maddie as she’s very excited about pumpkins. Ever since we went to the pumpkin patch, Maddie loves pulling into the driveway and excitedly points out the pumpkins on our front porch. She thought the pumpkin carving was interesting today. I made the Pooh pumpkin just for her.

Something Cullen is doing (39 weeks old): Cullen turned 9 months old this week. He has his 9-month appointment this week. He has started crawling on his hands and knees a bit more, though still finds that he is faster doing the army crawl. He’s started resisting his antibiotic. This is particularly frustrating since we will be giving it to him every day for who knows how long. I hate that we’ll have to fight him daily to take it. He had some exciting new foods this week: saltine crackers, blueberry muffin, multigrain cheerios, and pancakes (technically, he had a little bit once before, but this time he had a bit more).

Something I’m doing towards my goals: I’m getting caught up on organizing my photos (not specifically listed on my goals, but still related to my goals). I’m also formulating a plan to run a 5k next year. I’m excited about the idea! I hope I can keep my motivation and complete it next year.

Something planned: Book club, play date, a trip to the museum, and Halloween fun!

Something captured: Keira, Cullen, and Maddie at a Halloween festival on Saturday.

Happy 4th Anniversary!

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

Four years ago today, Gabe and I were getting married in beautiful Sedona, Arizona. We have had a wonderful, and very eventful, four years and I look forward to many, many more.

I’m excited about our dinner tonight at Acme Food and Beverage Company in Carrboro. Each year, we have picked a restaurant recommended by friends that neither of us have experienced. We had hoped to eat at Lantern this year, but unfortunately we waited too long to make reservations. Maybe we will try it another year. Acme also sounded interesting, and we found plenty of things on their menu that we wanted to try.

In previous years, we have eaten at 18 Seaboard, Mo’s Diner, and Second Empire. Our favorite anniversary dinner was Mo’s Diner, hands down. I think it may have even been my favorite meal ever.

Speaking of favorite things, this is one of my favorite photos from our wedding day. Our ceremony was perfect and beautiful.

Lots of photos posted!

Something that made me happy this week: Celebrating my 3rd anniversary with Gabe!

Something I’m thinking: I came to the realization this week that my daughter no longer sleeps through the night. We had a few months of her sleeping through the night before the regression. We’re in big trouble when the new baby arrives!

Something I’m hoping: I’m hoping to see the rest of our photos from Catherine Keene Photography soon! We had a photo session with her yesterday, and I’ll be posting a few sneak peeks tomorrow.

Something happening around the house: Gabe stained the deck! We have been a bit stressed over how it was going to weather the winter without protection. The rails still aren’t finished, but we’re far less concerned about that part. Maybe we will have a few more nice days so he can finish those rails. I also made a little more progress on Maddie’s mural.

Something I’m reading: I finished reading The Graveyard Book for book club. I started reading The Help which is our next book club selection.

Something tasty I ate this week: Gabe and I had a tasty, fancy dinner at Second Empire to celebrate our 3rd anniversary.

Something Maddie did this week: Maddie continues to amaze us every day. This week, she said one of the most complete sentences that we have heard her say. While Gabe was getting her dressed for school in the morning, she said, “Dada, I need my pants on.” She’s a little chatterbox these days for sure. This week, we acquired a potty for her as she’s been showing some interest in wanting to sit on the potty. The first night we had it, we sat her on it before bathtime. She was so excited to sit on her very own Maddie-sized potty. She even peed in it! I think it just surprised her a little, but it’s a small step in a series of steps towards potty training. I don’t think we’ll focus on the potty training for several more months, but she’s at least getting used to the idea and starting to get some of the necessary concepts. She also appears to have (or will very, very soon) her 7th tooth.

Something happening with the pregnancy: This week, I felt very pregnant. I’m getting bigger, the trips to the bathroom at night have increased to at least two or three times, I’m no longer wearing my wedding ring, and I’m starting to see the swelling that I was oh-so-familiar-with last time. Waddle, waddle. Appropriately, I’ll enter my third trimester by the end of this week. Time flies.

Something I struggled with this week: I struggled with the thoughts that Gabe was leaving us next week for a business trip for about 3 days. Fortunately, his business trip has been postponed to November (and may only be a day or so). I know I can handle it, but it’s still scary for me. Soon, we won’t have a choice but to have a one-to-one ratio between parents and kids. I know I’ll look back on these days when it was just Maddie and think about how easy it was with just one kid!

Something I’m doing towards my goals: Hrm, nothing much in particular. We celebrated our 3rd anniversary, so I suppose we’re on our way to the goal of celebrating our 10th in style!

Something I learned this week: I attended a Mothers & More meeting where we had two members present about cultural differences between Europe and the US. One of the members is from France and the other is from Germany. It was very entertaining and informative! I learned many little cultural tidbits in this discussion!

Something I’m looking forward to next week: Book club, Halloween, and the Spooooooooky Sleepover.

Something random: Not everything happens for a reason.

Something I captured: Bengals are looking good at the half, so I thought it might be a good time to post this photo taken last week.

A Brief History of Kerry and Gabe in photos

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

This was originally part of the anniversary post, but I thought it could stand alone. While reflecting on the last several years, I thought it would be fun to look at a few photos from our relationship through the years.

I believe that this is the first photo that exists of the two of us together (just the two of us, not including photos with other people). This was on a trip to Atlantic City in late 2005.

This one is from mid-2006, during my first visit to visit his family in Kentucky.

Of course, we had some awesome photos from our wedding. I’ve posted and reposted some of the best over and over, so this time I thought I’d pick one from our honeymoon in NYC:

From our first cruise in September 2007:

Just before Maddie was born in early 2008:

One of our favorite family photos in May 2008 (Maddie is 3-months old):

And one of our family portraits in the Fall of 2008:

On our cruise to Bermuda in May of this year:

And on our cruise last month to New England and Canada:

Last night at our anniversary dinner:

Happy 3rd Anniversary!

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Today, Gabe and I are celebrating our 3rd anniversary! Last year, I wrote up a little summary of the major events that have happened since we have been married. Whew, we have covered a lot of ground! In the past year, we have added a few more milestones and major events.

  1. We are expecting our second child, a son, in a few short months.
  2. We went on TWO cruises in the past year, experiencing cruising with a toddler for the first (and second) time. It’s very different from our cruise to Alaska in 2007. We were excited to do some traveling again (but wonder if it will be possible with two small kiddos).
  3. Since our last anniversary, we have added a few more places to our list of destinations that we have experienced together. We added a new country (Bermuda), a new state (Maine), and two new Canadian provinces (New Brunswick and Nova Scotia).
  4. We continued to take a massive number of photos, adding probably another 9,000 to our archives.

Life just keeps getting better and better, and I’m so happy to spend it with Gabe and my sweet little girl. We are looking forward to what this next year will bring with the birth of our son and the transition to a family of four.

Seeking restaurant recommendations, again

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

Last year, I asked for restaurant recommendations for our anniversary dinner. We received some great replies, and we’ll be looking at those again. I thought I’d send out another request for ideas. We LOVED Mo’s Diner. It’s tempting to go there again this year, but we would rather try something different, preferably a place neither of us have visited. We went to 18 Seaboard for our first anniversary which was another good recommendation from friends. Where should we go this year?
