The Sunday Somethings, 27jul13 and 04aug13

August 4th, 2013

Something that makes me happy: Maddie’s first homework assignment was to do two scrapbook pages about her family. I’m so proud of her work!

Something happening around the house: We were supposed to have had a games night this weekend, but we ended up canceling. Apparently, we picked a bad weekend for games. We may have to wait until after TBGT to have our next…

Something I’m reading: I finished Summer Rental. I read Fault in Our Stars, which I thought was fantastic. I’m reading We Need to Talk about Kevin. I’ll finish it, but I’m not enjoying it as much as I had hoped. The writing doesn’t flow well for me.

Something Gabe is reading: Gabe finished Leviathan Wakes, and he started Shogun.

Something I’m watching: We watched the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with the kids for the first time this weekend. They seemed to enjoy it!

Something I’m playing: We played Hanabi for the first (and second) time this weekend. We’re going to have to find a copy of that one! We’re still playing a little Letterpress.

Something I’m creating: I finished Cullen’s letter, woohoo! It won’t be long before I need to start working on Maddie’s 5 and a half year old letter. I am close to finishing my photobook from the Disney trip I took with Audrey last year in April. I should be able to finish and order it this week (assuming I can take advantage of a decent sale!).

Something tasty: Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream.

Something about both kiddos: They have been playing together quite nicely lately. I was worried that Maddie’s departure to kindergarten might case a rift between them, but it seems like they are doing pretty well. Of course, they have their share of fights. Today, they spent quite some time playing outside together with an elaborate game of visiting school, the doctor’s office, going to the house, making foods, and other such tasks.

Something Maddie is doing (5 years old): She’s continuing to adjust to kindergarten, and she’s doing quite well. She doesn’t care to share many details about her days. She has learned all the Letterland people, and she’s quite proud of herself. She has been having mostly “green” days with her behavior chart, but she did have a “yellow” day. It sounded like she was talking when she wasn’t supposed to be talking. I thought that was good because it meant she was making friends, but it turns out that she was talking to herself. Maddie really wants to take a trip to the beach. She still talks about it often, and today even said that “this summer is the best time to go to the beach!” She had fun yesterday making dull pennies shiny again with vinegar and salt. Hooray for science! We haven’t had a chance to work on R2-D2 lately. We finished the cupcake club book, and we are now both enjoying Remarkable. Maddie had lo mein on Saturday and decided that wasn’t so bad. She recently decided cucumbers were ok, too. We’re glad to add to the list of things that Maddie will eat.

Something Cullen is doing (3.5 years old): Cullen and Maddie have been building a lot of things out of Legos. Cullen described their “Castle of Doom:” “And inside, there are ghostess. They are black and spooky, spooky, spooky. That’s how spooky they are. And their eyes are RED and they GLOW IN THE DARK. You can only see the eyes. And their only friends are the DRAGONS, also in the castle.” Cullen’s favorite books have been his two comic books about superheroes (one Lego one about many different heroes and another real comic book about just Batman and Robin). He also really likes his new Clifford books and The Cat in the Hat Comes Back. Cullen was stung by a bee last week at school. He has been taking Lego minifigures in the car and acting out scenes from his comic books.

Something I’m looking forward to: I’m looking forward to next weekend’s kid book club field trip!
