The Sunday Somethings, 08jul12 and 01jul12

July 8th, 2012

Something that makes me happy: Our vacation at the beach with great friends!

Something I’m thinking: We got back from our trip on Wednesday, so I didn’t feel like doing it that evening. And then I figured we were close enough to the next Sunday that I would just skip a week. Did anyone miss me?

Something happening around the house: We’ve had temperatures over 100 degrees almost every day this week! After dinner tonight, we let the kids play in their pool. It was so hot sitting there watching them that I went and put on my swimsuit and joined them! The baby pool was a little small, but it was refreshing! The kids thought it was hilarious to play in their pool with Mommy.

Something I’m reading: I’ve been reading Unbroken which is September’s book club book. I am getting close to finishing up, and I am going to start Divergent for July’s book club next. I had been dreading Unbroken for months and was a bit intimidated by it. Unbroken is a fascinating story. I’m enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would.

Something Gabe is reading: He doesn’t read anymore. Ha!

Something I’m watching: Bunheads! It inspired me to watch my Gilmore Girls DVDs. The kids have been watching Animaniacs. It’s their current favorite show.

Something I’m playing: While we were at the beach, we played Dominion and Forbidden Island. We had games night yesterday, and I played Fresco, Elfenland, and Amun Re. Good games night for me! Gabe and I are still playing too much Mystery Manor on the iPad, and Gabe’s still playing too much Valor on the iPad. Good times.

Something tasty: I made treats with the kids this week. We made white chocolate covered strawberries with blue sprinkles for July 4th (red, white, and blue!) and “sparklers” out of pretzel rods dipped in chocolate and sprinkles.

Something about both kiddos: The kids LOVED the beach. They built sandcastles, played in the waves, and just enjoyed the fun in the sun. This beach trip was our best yet! We did see quite a few stingrays in the water and some horseshoe crabs. I’m glad I didn’t know how painful stingrays could be at the time! Yikes! We literally saw SCHOOLS of them, and at one point they jumped all around me. Eek! We finally got the 2nd Princess Minnie, so each kid has one of their own. Thank goodness. This has restored major peace to the house. Of course, one of the first things they did was fight over whose Minnie was whose. We solved that by putting an “M” on one tag and a “C” on the other. While we were on the trip, we put the kids in the same room one night at bedtime. We had gone to the serpentarium that day where we saw all kinds of snakes, alligators, and turtles. The kids kept each other awake by chatting about the “dangerous” snakes and everything that they saw. It was cute. After a little of this, Maddie said, “Cullen, let’s just go to sleep.” Never thought I’d hear that! Cullen was propped up on his elbows watching her and laid down within a few minutes. We were amazed it worked. I guess all the fun of Edisto wore them out!

Something Maddie is doing (52 months old): Maddie was worried about getting sick from Cullen (and thankfully she didn’t seem to). At some point, Maddie said, “I’m not sick. I think I was visited by the booger fairy.” Hilarious! I don’t know where she got that one. She drives me crazy sometimes with her thing where she tells other people what to say. “Cullen, say, ‘Maddie, what are you drawing?’” We’re still working on trying to break her of that habit! She is starting her swimming lessons this week. She has 4 days this week and 4 days next week, so I’m excited to see how she will do this year.

Something Cullen is doing (29 months old): Cullen had a fever the last two Fridays. He didn’t have too many symptoms aside from a stuffy nose. Poor little guy kept waking up saying that he can’t breathe (except the couple nights where he was confused and said, “I can’t sneeze. I can’t sneeze. I can’t sneeze.”). We delayed our trip to Edisto to make sure he was healthy before we left. I’m so glad we were still able to go on the trip!! Cullen wasn’t as thrilled with the water as Maddie. He liked splashing in the very shallow parts, but he didn’t like getting into water much past his knees. One of his highlights was visiting the Serpentarium where he got to hold a Ball Python! He was so excited! Cullen is glad to have his Princess Minnie. He takes her to bed every night and checks to see if the “C” is on the tag.

Something I am struggling with: I’m bummed that I wasn’t able to be there when someone really needed me! Hopefully, I can make it up to her soon.

Something I’m looking forward to: I’m so excited to see the Roger Waters “The Wall” tour tomorrow with Gabe, my sister, and my brother-in-law. Can’t wait!!!

Something captured: I love these beach cuties!

I’m so glad your kids finally love the beach!!! :) Crazy about the sting rays though… that would totally freak me out! I’ve never seen them in the water at the beach – although every now and then a fisherman will catch one. Love Maddie’s swimsuit! ;)
