New Hair!
March 21st, 2011I was nervous and excited about my first trip to a “real” salon in my adult life. Of course, I wasn’t quite prepared by the cost of a “real” salon, especially since I was also getting my hair colored for the first time ever. Yikes! Fortunately, I was aware of how much I was about to spend earlier that day. Gabe dropped me off at the salon and said something as we were pulling into the parking lot. I said, “um, what, I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you. I was thinking about how I am just about to spend more money on a single haircut than I have during the last 10 years, total.” I might have exaggerated a little bit…but really, I typically get my hair cut not even twice a year at one of the discount chains. I have very rarely paid more than $20 for a “wash and cut.” So, um, yeah, this visit was a bit of a shock for me!
First…I had Gabe take some “before” photos:

Take a look at the back of my hair. I never noticed the “bands” where my hair from the top is straighter, curlier, straighter, then curlier again. The stylist was able to tell that I had been pregnant somewhat recently. I told her, yes, I had a one year old son. She held my hair out and examined it further and said, “you have another kid, don’t you?” “Um, yes, I do.” She asked, “how old is she?” and I said, “why don’t you tell me.” She correctly guessed that the older child must be around 3. Yes. She could tell all of this by looking at my hair.
We had a little consultation where I allowed her to do whatever she wanted provided that my hair wasn’t too short when she was finished, I could wash and go each morning (product is fine), and I didn’t have to go to the salon too often to get the color or cut touched up. After our little chat, she gathered together my hair and chopped off my pregnancy with Maddie and halfway through nursing her. Um, yeah. She just cut off like 5+ inches of my hair AND SHE HAD NOT EVEN GOTTEN STARTED. She just did that so she didn’t have to color a bunch of extra hair. Yikes! My hair already felt really short.
The coloring process was an experience. She did a good job picking my color and keeping it natural. I can tell a big difference, though!

When she finished, I thought that the back looked great…but I was not so sure overall. I thought maybe I had made a huge mistake. I didn’t recognize myself in the mirror. It took me probably a little over a day to feel better about it.

Now, I don’t even feel like it’s that big of a difference! Of course, my hair doesn’t look exactly like the stylist fixed it, but it’s not too far off either. She did a great job with my requirements. She said that I didn’t even need to return for 4 months which is very reasonable! I plan to go back…and I just might let her make another change next time! Or maybe I’ll wait another decade before doing anything too drastic.

That’s freaky that she could see your pregnancies in your hair!!! Wild! The new ‘do is really nice though! You would probably fall over if you knew what I paid for regular haircuts though!

Why did I end both those sentences with the word “though”?

Welcome to the world of styled hair! I love your look Kerry. It’s about time you entered this world
. Your hair is beautiful and I am pretty wow’d by the stylist’s expertise in reading yours. She is a keeper and I do hope you continue with the hair style. It’s not _that_ different but enough to give that wow factor.

And Ann – you are hilarious. I often re-read my statements and just shiver if I end with a preposition or use the same word/phrase again.
