Half a year, already?
July 22nd, 2010Wow. I thought time passed quickly with Maddie, but it’s just crazy now with the two kids. I can’t believe that my sweet baby boy is already 6 months old. He’ll be in college before I can blink. This must mean that it’s time for another letter to Cullen.
Dear Cullen,

I can’t believe that you, my sweet baby boy, are already 6 months old. That does not seem possible. It’s been yet another eventful month with a trip to the mountains and another to the beach. You continue to be a very smiley boy. You have the best smile! I don’t know if I have ever met such a smiley baby. I’m proud to be your Mommy!

In the past month, you’ve formed an even stronger bond with me. You have preferred Mommy in the past, but you took it to a new level in the past few weeks. When you see me coming over for a visit at daycare, you get very excited. I come over to visit and nurse you generally twice a day. It’s getting harder to leave you as you do not like it when I have to hand you back to the teachers and leave you. It breaks my heart to see you upset like that.

You have been nursing exclusively until today when you had your first taste of banana. It’s hard to say whether you liked it or not. You certainly seemed fairly interested in the new experience. You mostly liked waving around the spoon and spitting banana all over your chin, neck, bib, shirt, and pants. Messy boy! I’m looking forward to more food adventures with you and have decided to make most of your baby food myself. After bananas, we plan for you to try avocado, green beans, peaches, and sweet potatoes. I’m sure we’ll add more yummy things to your diet soon.

When we gave you the spoon, you knew just what to do with it. Of course, I’m not sure that means anything since everything goes into your mouth these days. We have to keep a watchful eye on your sister’s smaller items such as her shell and rock collections. You have already drooled all over one of her puzzle pieces. You seem to have an excessive amount of drool! You still do not have any teeth. Since you will be nursing for at least the next 6 months, this fact suits me just fine.

You’re increasingly curious about the world around you and spend more time playing on your belly. You’re quite the fan of grabbing items – toys, Mommy’s hair, drinks, and anything else within range. You’re not showing signs of crawling just yet, but you “belly surf” by putting your arms and legs up in the air while on your belly. You have mastered the art of rotating in a circle, and that often gets you to where you want to go. You can roll with ease. You do a little migrating around the room. We can’t trust you’ll be in exactly the same place that we set you down, but you’ll be pretty close. You can sit for very short periods of time, but you’re not quite stable enough to do it without close supervision. I’m sure you’ll be crawling and sitting before we know it.

Since you aren’t sitting or crawling just yet, you are still sleeping in the co-sleeper next to our bed. Considering that you only sleep in it about 5 or 10 minutes a night (an hour if we’re really lucky), you seem pretty safe in it. Regardless, we are going to start trying to put you into your crib soon. Maybe you’ll magically start sleeping through the night in the crib? You love to be held and you demand to be near Mommy all night. It’s wonderful to be so loved (though I wouldn’t complain if you did want to sleep through the night). I believe the extra bonding time is good for both of us. When you do sleep in the bassinet, you’ve been snoozing on your side or belly. You seem more comfortable that way, though I can’t say that it has significantly improved your sleeping patterns.

Your second trip to the mountains went well. You were the youngest of five kids on the trip – three 2 year olds, one 5 year old, and you. We went on another hike, and you enjoyed another ride in the Ergo carrier. You seem to enjoy the carrier! You spent some time in it at the beach as well. It’s nice and cozy for you and comfortable and convenient for me! Your first trip to the beach was a success. We laid you on the sand on a beach blanket under the shade of a cabana. It only took you a few minutes to fall asleep and take a little nap. The ocean waves were great at lulling you to sleep! You were one cool dude. I wasn’t a big fan of the sand getting everywhere, including on your sensitive skin. Fortunately, you didn’t seem to mind. We were able to wash it all off in the pool, which you also enjoyed.

You laugh sometimes, and I finally managed to get a few chuckles on video. I love your sweet baby laugh! I look forward to making you laugh more and more in the next months. You think that it is hilarious when we play peek-a-boo.

You’ve been very healthy overall. You had a little cold this month, but you never ran a fever and haven’t missed a day of school. I’m very happy with this, especially after the ER, hospital, and doctor visits in your first couple months. It’s been a relief for you to be healthy since then!

Your eyes are as blue as ever. I know you are a little boy, but I have to say that your eyes are very pretty! Don’t worry. I’ll make sure I modify my adjectives to “handsome” when you get a bit older. We think your eye color may stay blue at this point, but we’ll have to see.

I’m looking forward to finding out your measurements and other stats at your next doctor’s appointment. Your six month check up is next week. I am guessing you are somewhere between 16.5 and 17 pounds. You have been wearing 9 month clothing for a little while. Some of your clothing is even 12 month sized, and you’re starting to outgrow your 9-month sleepers.

Our daily commute to work has been so much better lately! Most of our rides are quite pleasant. You still have fussy days, but you have far more good days. The longer rides to the mountains and the beach have been decent, but we all get tired of being in the car when the ride is that long! You’re doing great, little buddy.

I love you more than you can imagine, my sweet baby boy. You’re growing so fast. You are such a happy addition to our family. I can’t wait to see what the next 6 months will bring. We love you biggest bunches, Cullen Man.

Love,
Mommy
