The Fall Television update

November 4th, 2009

I haven’t posted the fall update for “what we’re watching” on TV yet, so I thought I’d take a chance to write up the summary. We feel like we have a managable number of shows right now, but that might just be due to the fact that a couple of shows have been taking some breaks (due to the World Series, I suppose). I can’t decide if we’ll have more or less time to watch TV when the new baby arrives. I seem to recall watching quite a bit of television in the middle of the night while nursing, though most of that TV was rather mindless and not our normal lineup.

Our last TV update was in February.

Here are the shows that we are currently watching:
90210: Yes, I’m still watching this one. I know it’s not a great show, but it’s entertaining enough to me. Gabe doesn’t watch it, so it’s one that would be good for me to watch in the middle of the night while nursing… As I have said in the past, it’s a good one to watch when Gabe is rocking Maddie to sleep or not in the mood to catch up on shows.

Ace of Cakes: I love the cake shows! It’s good for us to have things like this on our DVR…the shows that we can pay half attention to while doing things like editing photos and playing Cafe World on Facebook. The cakes are amazing!

The Amazing Race 15: I hate how each season of Amazing Race has a different title/listing and therefore does not automatically get picked up by the DVR! Fortunately, we are usually on top of when the show is going to air and haven’t missed the first episode of a season yet. I’m having a hard time coming up with a favorite team this season. I have plenty that I am not sad when they are eliminated (and a good number of those have been eliminated). I still enjoy this one! We usually watch it the night that it airs to avoid spoilers but mostly because it is almost always delayed due to football. We set the DVR to record an hour extra, just in case. That is a lot of precious DVR space!

Cake Boss: I really like both cake shows. I have seen more episodes of Cake Boss and recently added Ace of Cakes as well. These shows make me want to find reasons to order fancy cakes.

Dollhouse: This show is in its second season, and we are enjoying it! It’s one of our favorites. They come up with some crazy stuff on that show. I just hope that it makes it through this season and onto another one!

Gossip Girl: I still consider this one to be a bit of a guilty pleasure, but I actually think it is a decent show (unlike 90210). Gabe and I are still enjoying it and often watch it the night it airs since it is on Monday nights (after the weekend when we have the greatest chance of catching up on shows).

Grey’s Anatomy: I wonder when this show is going to get cancelled. I don’t think that it can continue indefinitely. At least they don’t have the ghost Denny any more. Not sure what I think about it these days. I still enjoy watching it, but I’m definitely not as interested as I used to be. Plus, some of the stuff really gets to me. Maybe it’s the pregnancy hormones or just being a mom. I’m not sure I want to watch this week’s episode as it looks from the previews that the main case is going to be centered around a baby. I’m just not sure I can take it. I was extremely affected emotionally by the case a few weeks ago involving a baby and a botched c-section, and that was only for a few minutes of the show. I just can’t handle that stuff anymore.

Lie to Me: We have caught a few episodes here and there by accident and decided we liked it well enough to add it to the DVR. It’s a show that I feel like we can watch sporadically and still enjoy. We were convinced in a recent episode where he used his people reading skills in a shady poker game. We haven’t finished that episode yet. Man, if I had his skills, I’d play poker all the time (oh wait, I used to play poker all the time before Maddie came along…).

Sanctuary: This is all Gabe. I hear he’s watching it, but I haven’t actually seen him watch a single episode. I guess he catches up on his lunch break or maybe when I’m at book club and the like.

Stargate Universe: I can say the same for this show as Sanctuary. I have never seen him watch it, and I assume he watches it when I’m not around.

Shows we are planning to watch but are not currently airing:
Chuck: Looking forward to it!!! I guess this one will start in March of 2010. Long time to wait! Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like it will be a full season.

Lost: Looking forward to the last season!!!

Shows we are recording but not really watching:
Jeopardy: We just don’t have time for this one. I hear that co-worker is going to be on it sometime this month, so I’ll want to be sure to watch that episode (or perhaps those episodes!).

FlashForward: We thought about giving this show a try, but we haven’t watched a single episode. I’m thinking we’re going to give up on the idea. We haven’t deleted the episodes from the DVR, but I think it will happen soon. Oh well. If it gets hugely popular, we’ll just have to get it from Netflix.

Shows we dropped or that was cancelled:
Dirty Sexy Money: I was actually sad about this one getting cancelled! They aired a few episodes over the summer, ending in a sort of cliff-hanger where my reaction was along the lines of, “omg, what are they going to do next?!” Then, we found out that there were no plans to continue. Oh well. We would watch it if it got picked up again.

Hell’s Kitchen: I know we’ve missed at least one season, maybe two. We just fell out of this one with too many things to watch. It’s easy to drop the show when you don’t get started and invest yourself into the competitors. Don’t know if we’ll ever get back to this one with our limited TV time (or maybe it’s a candidate for late night nursing TV?).

Heroes: I was sad about losing this one, but we just lost interest and never had time to catch up on it. In my last post, I mentioned that I wasn’t sure we were going to continue. I don’t think we ever watched another episode. I was a little sad about it, since I had watched it from the beginning and enjoyed it. Might be one to pick up through Netflix sometime.

Privileged: Looks like this one was cancelled. I enjoyed it well enough, but I’m not heartbroken. The starring actress has made a few appearances on Gossip Girl.

Reaper: Not sure if this one is still continuing, but we ended up dropping it last season. We just didn’t find ourselves interested in watching it and eventually decided to delete the episodes on the DVR to make room for other stuff. It’s one that I would potentially consider getting the episodes on Netflix someday.

True Blood: We didn’t want to pay for HBO again and plan to someday get the DVDs from Netflix.

I’m a 90210 junkie too! Loving it! ;) I love, love, love Ace of Cakes, but I don’t know how you can stand to watch Cake Boss! I’ve watched a couple episodes and just couldn’t stand all the screaming and how grouchy and bossy everyone is. I much prefer Duff and his happy crew! :) Grey’s is annoying me too. The first couple of seasons were so good, but it has really gone downhill. I wish they had killed off Izzy. That would have been at least one improvement. And yeah, don’t watch sad baby shows when you are pregnant! I still bawl at sad baby/kid story lines in shows like that, but it really is too much to handle with pregnancy hormones! I was bummed about DSM being cancelled too! I really liked that and Lipstick Jungle a LOT and was surprised when both were cancelled.

We definitely have differences in our television tastes. Probably generational since I am like your grandmother’s age.

Lost and Amazing Race are the only two we have in common. Of course, I should write out all the I am watching. And then people will be like “How do you have time to watch all that”.
