Board Game Review: Shear Panic

February 1st, 2009

Santa brought us the Mayfair board game, Shear Panic. While Gabe’s parents and nephew were visiting, we had a chance to play the game. We played the 4-player version. In the 4-player game, each person has two sheep in their designated color. The sheep are initially organized in a 3×3 grid, with a black sheep added in the mix to make 9 total sheep. The board is used for scoring and determining the current phase of the game. Each phase has different rules for how and when to score. Depending on the round, points are awarded for having your two sheep close together, being as close as possible to the black sheep, how close your sheep are to Roger, and how far your sheep are from the Shearer.

I enjoyed playing the game. It was a little different, though some of the play was a little awkward. I also cannot decide if it is possible to have much strategy in the four player game. It seems like some strategy would pay off, but it may be too random in between turns to really be able to plan. Time will tell with subsequent plays.
