Movie Review: Marley & Me
January 23rd, 2009
I went with Kristin and Chad on Christmas Day to see Marley & Me. I haven’t read the book, but Kristin had read it (it was actually a Christmas gift from me to her a few years ago). For the most part, I enjoyed the movie or at least most of the movie. While I appreciate that not all movies can end happily, I’m not sure that I enjoyed the downer feelings that I had when I left the movie. I knew before going into the movie that it was the story of a dog’s life which sadly includes the dog’s death. The majority of the movie was fun. I would recommend it with a disclaimer: prepare to be saddened in the last minutes of the movie. Sure, it’s a happy sad. It’s a tribute to the “world’s worst dog” and his meaningful role in his family’s lives…but it made me want to cry buckets. I felt sad when I walked out of the theatre. That was a bit of a bummer to me. There is something to be said about a movie that makes you feel real emotions, but I don’t think that I enjoy being sad when I leave the theatre.
I refuse to admit that parts of the movie made me actually contemplate getting a dog someday. Nope, not me. You didn’t hear me say it. Of course, other parts of the movie reminded me of some of the reasons that I do not want a pet!
