Too Much Television, Revisited
October 23rd, 2008Before the season started, I posted all the stuff that we were planning to watch (plus some stuff not currently showing). Currently, we have on our DVR waiting for us: 2 episodes of Fringe, an episode of Dirty Sexy Money, 2 episodes of Heroes, 2 episodes of House, 5 episodes of Jeopardy, 2 episodes of True Blood, and an episode of Private Practice. After tonight, add an episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Whew!! It’s been hard for us to keep up this year. From the previous list, 6 shows aren’t currently airing. We’re recording but not really watching 5 shows. We dropped 5 shows, and we’re still trying to keep up with 12 shows.
Shows from the list that aren’t airing at the moment:
Damages, Dollhouse, Hell’s Kitchen, High Stakes Poker, Lost, Reaper
Shows we’re recording but not really watching:
Don’t Forget the Lyrics!: This one has been recording, but I don’t think that we’ve watched any of this season’s episodes. The episodes keep getting deleted before we get a chance to watch them, and we don’t really have time. We’ll keep recording them just in case we get a break…
Family Guy: I’m not even sure that this one is still recording. I think that it conflicts with two other shows. We wouldn’t have time for it, anyway!
Jeopardy: This one is staying on our box, but we definitely don’t have time for it right now either. One of these days, we’ll have time for it again.
Jon & Kate Plus 8: We might not be recording this one right now. It was conflicting with two other shows. I’m not sure it is on the DVR at all, but we’ll put it back on there one of these days. For now, we just don’t have time for it.
Three Sheets: I’m not sure if new episode have been recording. This one is Gabe’s and one of those filler type shows. No time for fillers!
We’ve had to drop a few:
American Idol: Ok, this one isn’t technically airing, but I can tell you right now that we’re not adding it when it airs at mid-season. We aren’t going to miss this one too much. We had fun watching it, but we only added it last year because of the writer’s strike. This year we have priorities…it’s too hard to keep up with TV with the baby!
Biggest Loser: Families: I am disappointed with dropping this one. I don’t think that we would have dropped it, but it conflicted with two other shows…which means that we had to start recording it on our secondary DVR in the bedroom. We watch most of our TV in the living room, so we’re just getting too far behind. Considering that we’re not into this season yet, I think we’re probably going to just skip it this time.
The Office: I’m sad about this one, too. We will probably get this season on DVD sometime when we get a chance and watch it. It was conflicting with two other shows…so we’re also having problems keeping up with it since it’s on the bedroom DVR.
Pushing Daisies: We finally deleted this one and stopped recording it when we realized we were never really in the mood to watch it. I thought that this one started out pretty good, but we felt it was the same thing over and over. We started to lose interest last season, and now we just don’t have time for all of our shows.
Survivor: Gabon: I’m a little sad about this one, especially since this is the first time it’s in HD! I have been watching each season of Survivor for a few years now. This one looked a bit interesting due to the setting, but it just wasn’t enough to overcome our time constraints. Can’t watch it all, and we don’t have room on our DVR to keep it for later.
And finally, my thoughts on the shows that we’re watching regularly:
90210: Nevermind the fact that I forgot to mention it when I originally published this post… I am enjoying this one and keeping up with it regularly. I love how they have references to the first version for those of us who watched it back then. Gabe could do without this one…definitely one he doesn’t care to watch with me. I pretty much have to watch it when he’s not around.
Amazing Race: Oops, forgot to list this one, too. I guess I should have cross checked my original list a little more closely. We keep up with this one regularly…it’s hard to get behind on the reality shows. If you’re not careful, you’ll accidentally hear about which team lost or see a preview that spoils who is still competing. This is one of the reasons we had to drop Biggest Loser. I’m still a big fan of Amazing Race. We aren’t sure who we want to win quite yet.
Chuck: I’m so glad that this one was renewed for this season. This is definitely one of my favorites!! You’re missing out on some quality geeky humor if you’re not watching Chuck. Good times.
Dirty Sexy Money: This is another one that I’m glad that made it through the writer’s strike and was renewed for another year. We kept putting this one off for several weeks, but now we’re all caught up (except last night’s episode). It took us a little while to remember what the heck was going on last season, but I think we’re mostly up to speed now! It’s been great so far! I’m glad that we’re still watching this one.
Fringe: We’re a little behind on Fringe, but that doesn’t mean that we aren’t enjoying it. It has some really oddball things, but I love John Noble’s character, Dr. Walter Bishop. Walter has been institutionalized for 17 years and has been released to help the government with recent fringe science cases. His character is very funny and quite odd (his son has to frequently translate his rants). Oh and his son is played by Joshua Jackson. That’s right…Pacey from Dawson’s Creek. As a closet fan of Dawson’s Creek, I can’t help but think of him as Pacey. Anytime his character says something crazy, I just exclaim, “Whatever, Pacey!” I’m getting a kick out of that as well. The stuff on this show seems a bit out there. I never watched much X-Files, but it seems to be along the same lines except for we have mad scientists instead of aliens. Good stuff.
Gossip Girl: I always need to have a few of these types of shows. I have really enjoyed this one because it so accurately represents the typical high school experience. Yeah, right! But that doesn’t matter too much to me. This season, Gabe and I determined that Chuck is one of our favorite characters. I enjoy following the Humphreys (though that little Jenny is more annoying by the day). I’m even a bit more interested in Blair this year - in the past, I really didn’t care about her that much. At the same time, I’m finding myself much less interested in Serena. I’m sure that this is intentional as isn’t the show really supposed to be about Blair? Anyway, I know it isn’t the best show ever, but I really enjoy it. We tend to keep up with this one pretty much as it isn’t one where we really have to concentrate 100% on the episode.
Grey’s Anatomy: We pretty much keep on top of new Grey’s Anatomy episodes as well. I don’t know that this season (or the last one) are as good as previous seasons, but I still love the show and the characters. It’s one of those shows that I’ll keep watching for as long as it airs.
Heroes: I still enjoy Heroes this season, though it’s quite a bit more confusing than it has been in previous seasons. In the first season or two, I felt like Heroes was kinda like Lost except that they actually answered viewers questions, were more predictable, and didn’t open up 10 questions for every answer. These days, I think Heroes is much more confusing and convoluted and more like Lost in that sense than it has been in the past. I’m not saying that this is a bad thing, though it is satisfying to get some answers now and again! We are a little behind on this one, and I hope to get caught up on it soon. We’re definitely into this one for the long haul.
House: We tend to get behind on House. We don’t plan on dropping it any time soon, and we enjoy watching it when we have a chance to catch up on our episodes. We just don’t itch to see the next episode like we might do with other series (though these days we don’t really have time to itch for the next episode…we’re just trying to keep ahead of the DVR so our shows don’t get deleted).
Private Practice: I can’t help but to continue watching this, even if I’m not as into it as I am Grey’s Anatomy. But I still like a lot of the characters, and I have gotten to know them fairly well by this point. As much as I know the show isn’t stellar, I do like it. I think Gabe wouldn’t have issues with dropping this one, but I think we’re going to keep it for now.
Privileged: Oooh, this is another show that I am enjoying. Not unlike Gossip Girl, this show accurately reflects everyone’s high school experiences (ok, I’m kidding again). While this one revolves around the rich family and the spoiled teenagers, it focuses more on Megan. I don’t feel like I have to relate to the characters in these types of shows, but I can definitely relate to Megan…though looking up how old she is supposed to be on the show (23) makes me feel old. Here I was thinking that maybe she was closer to my age, but I guess that doesn’t exactly make sense. Whatever. I am enjoying this one. Gabe doesn’t seem to mind it too much, though I don’t know that this is one of his “must sees.”
True Blood: For the first time, I am subscribing to premium movie channels so that I could watch this show. The show is based on Charlaine Harris’s Southern Vampire Series which I have read. I think the show is a bit racier than the books! I had posted my initial thoughts a little while ago.

After you watch last night’s Private Practice, you may end up dropping it. It was such a lousy episode. Ugh. I think I may end up dropping it if they keep doing episodes like that. I’m behind on House too. Don’t really care… all the episodes are kinda the same. Finally got the DVR to start taping Dirty Sexy Money again! Whew! I’ll need to read up on what I missed though. I just added two - The Girls Next Door (cracks me up!), and the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders:Making the Team! Gotta have a little Texas on my DVR!
