What’s on our DVR?
September 24th, 2007
The new Fall TV season is starting up, and our DVR box is getting full. I thought I’d post all the shows that are currently scheduled to record on our box…and a few that aren’t…yet (in alphabetical order):
Amazing Race 12 - Yeah, it’s lame to start the list with one that is not actually on the DVR box…and won’t be anytime soon, but I didn’t want to leave it off the list. Season 7 was the first season that I watched in its entirety, and I have been hooked ever since. It’s the one reality show that I would actually consider doing…except I can’t drive a stick-shift, so I guess I should learn that first.
Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? - This one is somewhat low on the priority list, but it doesn’t take very long for us to watch it. We usually fast forward almost everything except for the questions and answers. Sometimes we don’t even wait for the answers since they are often obvious for the lower grades. We’ll listen to the question and then we’ll fast forward until we see the contestant lock in his answer. Poor kids. They can’t spell at all, and some of them just aren’t too smart. We’re never putting our kids on a show like that. I won’t mention names, but there are a few that we always point out when the contestant picks them. “Oh, way to go, he/she’s as dumb as a brick! Nice pick!” We’re mean. They’re just kids, afterall… This was one of the shows that we picked up for the summer since all the regular shows weren’t in season…
Damages - We picked this one so we could have a regular series during the summer. We’ve enjoyed it well enough. I wouldn’t say it’s one of the best shows, but it will do for a summer series to get us back into the fall when the real TV starts up again…
Don’t Forget the Lyrics! - This is another one that we picked up for the summer, and that we fastforward through the majority. We basically just want to see what category and song that they picked, listen to them fumble through the song and submit their answer…and then fast forward to see if they are right and if they pick another song. Another one that doesn’t take terribly long to watch. These shows are much better if you don’t have to sit through all the cheesy suspense and all the “we’ll find out if you’re right after these commercials” moments. Yay for DVR!
Dirty Sexy Money - Can’t say a whole lot about this one yet…we’re trying out several new shows for the fall season. Half of them probably won’t get recorded more than 3 times, but we’re giving them a shot.
Family Guy - An old standby on our DVR. We just record new episodes, and they are good to watch when we’re just killing a little time or when we have nothing else interesting on the DVR list. We don’t watch very much live TV, so we have to have things like this. We probably need more of these.
Gossip Girl - I need something to replace Gilmore Girls, so I’m giving this one a try. We watched it last week…but I’m not sure about it yet. Gabe watched it, too, and I’m pretty sure he won’t care about this one even if I decide that I want to keep it around. I need my WB (ahem, I mean CW) shows every once in a while. They are my little guilty pleasures.
Grey’s Anatomy - We have seasons one and two on DVD, and we need to watch them sometime…though we know quite a bit of backstory by now. We started watching this one from the beginning of last season. Well, I started watching it from the beginning of last season. Gabe refused to even be in the room for the first two or three episodes…then he was in the room for the next one or two but was reading a book and trying not to pay attention. Finally, he broke down and admitted that not only did he like the show but it was one of his favorites. I’m looking forward to seeing what they are going to do with it this season, and we plan to watch the spinoff as well.
Hell’s Kitchen - This one is hanging around waiting for the next season to start…which I think is going to be in the Summer of 2008. Since the last one just finished in mid-August, this isn’t a big surprise. We thought we would pick up Kitchen Confidential for the normal fall season…but it looks like we have too many conflicts for it to be recording.
Heroes - This was the show that I was most excited about months before the fall season last year. And, as it turned out, we were right about it being a good one to pick up last year. Maybe one of our new picks this year will be good, too? And the new season of Heroes starts tonight, yay!
High Stakes Poker - This is pretty much the only poker show that either of us care to watch at this point. The only problem is that you have to subscribe to an extra tier on cable…the games tier or something? It is on the Game Show Network, so we catch other shows on it as well. Anyway, we think this is the best poker show out there. It’s definitely worth the extra $2-3 per month to get the extra cable tier.
House - I’ve been watching this one for two full seasons. New episode tomorrow, yay! It should be interesting…wonder how they are going to bring our characters back. I mean, they are bringing them back, right? Wonder if we will pick up some new characters, too…
Jeopardy! - Yeah, we’re geeks. If it makes you feel any better, we haven’t actually watched it in a while, though the new “season” just started a week or two ago. We’ll sometimes watch this one as we’re eating dinner or just need something quick to watch. We only allow the DVR box to record new episodes and only save 5 at a time.
Kitchen Nightmares - Well, I thought we would pick this one up since the next Hell’s Kitchen isn’t until next summer…but it is conflicting with two other shows right now, so it isn’t recording. If one of the other shows doesn’t make it (Gossip Girl and Private Practice are the conflicts), then we have Kitchen Nightmares as a fall back. I have a feeling that I will be keeping Private Practice since I like Gray’s Anatomy so much, but the verdict is out on Gossip Girl.
Little People, Big World - Another random one that we have on there to just record new episodes (lately there haven’t been any). I believe this was another one that we picked up during the summer to fill the void left by the absence of our regular TV shows.
Lost - Another one of our favorites, though we are sad that it doesn’t start until February. Sheesh! Guess our baby better like watching Lost!
The Office - I haven’t seen most of the first two seasons, but I decided to add it to my list last year before the third season started. It’s another one of my favorites. This one starts back on Thursday - yay!
Private Practice - I didn’t care too much for the sorta-pilot episode that they had last year. We were all excited to have the special two-hour episode of Grey’s Anatomy, but it quickly became clear that it was a spin-off attempt. We were disappointed! I think it is just going to take some time for us to learn the characters and like it as much as Grey’s Anatomy (ok, we probably will never like it as much as Grey’s Anatomy). I’m sure that I will want to keep this one around, and hopefully it will be decent. It starts this week, too.
Pushing Daisies - Ok, so this one isn’t officially on the list yet since it hasn’t been available to add to the roster. It premieres next week. Another attempt at starting a new show. I hope that our new show picks are good ones, but then again it might help if not all of them make it. We just don’t have time to watch everything!
Reaper - This new show has potential and vaguely reminds us of Dead Like Me (which we both really liked). And hey, maybe it will help fill my need to have some WB (er, CW) shows. Anyway, I’m looking forward to it and hope that it doesn’t suck.
The Shield - This is all Gabe. I’ve never watched an episode of The Shield. I don’t think that it is time for the new season of this yet…maybe this is one of those beginning of the calendar year series? I think that there is only one more season of this one, according to wikipedia.
The Singing Bee - We picked this one up this summer around the same time that we picked up Don’t Forget the Lyrics. In some ways, I like it better than the other lyrics show since it has various games instead of the same one. Sometimes the hired band/musicians are pretty terrible, though, and that gets annoying.
Survivor: China - I’ve been watching Survivor off and on for the past 3 or 4 years. It’s one to fill the time, I guess. It always takes me so long to get into each season as you don’t get a chance to know who to like for a while, usually. Gabe and I find it easy to figure out who to hate less than 10 minutes into the first episode (as we did last week). We have maybe one or two people that don’t absolutely annoy us so far. I’m sure some are flying under the radar now, so we’ll see what the season brings. This is a good show to have on when I’m working on the website or something as I don’t have to pay 100% attention to it…
The Wonder Years - Gabe LOVES that our DVR box has filled up with episodes of the Wonder Years. I think that the DVR records at least two episodes daily. If this series were on DVD, I wouldn’t have to record them all…but in the meantime, it has been fun watching the episodes. I’m pretty sure I watched most of the series back when it ran, but it was so long ago that I barely remember anything from any of the episodes that I have rewatched so far. Yay for Wonder Years!
