Hey, there’s no wrong way to eat a Reese’s
April 12th, 2007
I’m going to stand by the statement that there’s no wrong way to eat a Reese’s. Can we just extend this to “there’s no wrong way to eat a snack food?” Moving to the lighter side of “weird things about me,” I bring you just some of my snack food eating habits.
I suppose that we should start with Reese’s. I have demonstrated how I consume a Reese’s cup with the photo strip on the right. Thanks to blogAnon, I have provided multiple visual aids for these blogoddities (as she puts them). I don’t feel that there is anything strange about the way that I eat a Reese’s…chocolate first, then peanut butter. This is how I eat them EVERY single time, if that makes it any more noteworthy.
Despite the advertising, I would like to state for the record that I’m sure that there are some very wrong ways to eat a Reese’s…but I’m pretty sure that “chocolate first” isn’t one of those ways. When I asked Gabe to provide examples, his two suggestions were “fry it” and “dip it in butter.” I think that food stands at the State Fair would beg to differ.
Reese’s cups are not the only candy that I eat chocolate first. I tend to eat many chocolate covered candies in the same way. Sure, it can get a little messy sometimes, but for me it is the “right” way to consume the candy. I definitely eat the chocolate covering on Three Musketeers bars first (technically it’s not chocolate first as the insides are chocolate as well). I have to do that one in sections…gnaw off the chocolate covering for about an inch or two, eat the nougety center, repeat. Kit-Kats start out in the usual way (one “stick” at a time). First, the chocolate sides are nibbled, then I consume each wafer layer one at a time. YUM! I have prepared another visual aid for you, lucky you!

For the record, particularly gooey chocolate bars (for example, Snickers and other candy bars containing caramel) are consumed in what you may consider the “normal” way.
This time of year provides more fun candy opportunities. My favorite is the ‘hiding eggs’ (specifically Brach’s is the best). It may come as no surprise to you that I first like to eat the candy coating. Look! It’s a photo of me enjoying a tasty hiding egg. The inlay shows what the egg looked like prior to its unveiling. Oh precious, tasty hiding eggs, I miss you already. I’ll see you again in 11 months.
I have to admit that I eat M&Ms and other candy coated small candies in a similar way. The dissecting in this case is not done outside of the mouth, but in a careful way of putting the small candy-shelled morsel in between my front teeth so to separate the shell from the inner candy. I explained this to a friend (we’ll call her “blogAnon“), thinking that she would think that I’m completely nuts and wouldn’t quite get what I was trying to say. As I’m describing the splitting apart of the M&M, she says, “oh yeah, and then it flips up!” “Exactly!” It’s so nice to be understood.
Now, I know what you are thinking. Is your odd dissection of foods just limited to candy? Oh no, though I have somewhat determined that it is limited to certain snack foods. I have yet to come up with a “real” food that I consume in an unconventional way. I know some of you out there need to segregate your foods or eat all of one item during your dinner before moving to the next item.
If that sounds like you, then you’re more particular than I am (um, in this case)…though I would prefer my disparate food items not touch *too* much.
My two notable oddities with salty snack foods is my habit of sucking the cheese out of combos (you know, those cheese filled pretzel things. and yes, I did say “pretzel” – the cracker variety is an abomination). Hey, at least all of my snack food weird habits forces me to consume the snacks slowly. Have you tried to suck the cheese out of combos? It’s sorta tricky.
And I’ll leave you with one more consumption oddity. I like to lick my flavored chips/crackers. “Doesn’t it get soggy?” No, not really. There’s not really enough time between the licking of the flavor and the chewing of the chip. Sogginess doesn’t set in immediately, you know. And I don’t slobber all over it or anything…I just like to lick off the flavor. I have once again provided before and after photos for reference. See the tasty looking, lickable flavor on the chip in the left photo? Don’t you want to lick it? Ok, maybe you don’t want to lick it…but I did! And I know for a fact that I am not the only person who shares this habit. I will not name names here to protect the insane, but I have a good friend who shares this obsession. So there! I might be weird, but it’s better than being boring.

Wow, though we’ve discussed your snack food dissections in rl, the visual aids really brought your descriptions to life. Omg, how long does it take you to eat a Kit-Kat?
But I think I really lost it when I saw your before and after ‘hiding eggs’ photo. And your statements “Oh precious, tasty hiding eggs, I miss you already. I’ll see you again in 11 months.†made me lmao.
I love your blogoddities!! Keep ‘em coming!

Finally I have logged in to post on the weird food eating habits. I have to confess to everyone, that I too am a freak when it comes to eating snack foods.
I eat my reese’s peanut butter first, then the chocolate ring.
I eat my kit kat’s, candy bars, and combos (pretzel flavor is the only kind I eat, the others suck), the exact same way as you.
I also eat m&m’s the same, peanut ones I eat peanut first.
And, I too lick the flavoring off of chips & crackers.
So, to anyone who believes that this behavior belongs to one person only, I must support Kerry and state that I too am weird. And we only found this out many years ago while discussing this very same topic. It is because of this commonality, that I believe we were destined to become friends.
